Student Rights (NYSED Summary)
Licensed private career schools in New York State are regulated by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). NYSED’s Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision (BPSS) monitors schools to help ensure that educational programs meet required standards and that students’ financial investment is protected.
Who May File a Complaint
If you are a current or former student or an employee of a licensed private career school in New York State and believe the school or anyone representing the school has acted unlawfully, you have the right to file a complaint with NYSED.
What You May File a Complaint About
Complaints may be made about school conduct, advertising or recruiting practices, standards and methods of instruction, equipment, facilities, qualifications of teaching and management personnel, enrollment agreements, tuition practices, school and student records, licensing or registration issues, or private school agents.
Tuition Reimbursement Fund (Basic Information)
New York State maintains a Tuition Reimbursement Fund to protect students attending non-degree proprietary schools. Students may be eligible for reimbursement if the school closes while the student is enrolled prior to completion of the program, or if NYSED determines a complaint is valid and involves a violation of applicable Education Law or Commissioner’s Regulations.
To file a claim for reimbursement through the Tuition Reimbursement Fund, a student must first file a complaint with NYSED BPSS.
